Chapter 9

“What do you mean you lost Bella? How could you let something like this happen, Maggie?” My father was pacing back and forth across the lawn pounding his fist in his hand in frustration.

I wanted to stand up for myself, but as the leader of my team, I’d already beat myself up far worse than William Fortune ever could.

“I am departing in a few minutes, and I cannot believe I now have to worry about our home, everyone under our care, and now Bella while I’m gone. I wouldn’t dream of leaving but Victoria insists she needs to be back with her coven. And since I want her out of harm’s way, I’ve agreed to fly her back to Tennessee.”

My father ran his hand through his thick red hair, that famous temper making an appearance and causing me to shrink with every word he launched at me. I could see Antoine and Tor frowning at his diatribe and hoped this evening wouldn’t end in a fistfight. The way I felt right now, I might throw the first punch!

“Trixie will stay behind to keep you company,” he stated.

“Trixie?” I looked around, confused as to who he was referring to.

“Oh, for heaven’s sake, Maggie... Trixie!” My dad shoved What’s Her Name out from behind where she’d been hiding behind him, and she gave me a little wave and simper.

“What’s Her Name is Trixie?” shot out of my mouth before I could censor myself. My father just glowered at me and spun on his heel, reaching for his overnight bag and Victoria’s hand and marched over to his waiting vehicle.

“You will keep me appraised of what you intend to do to recover Bella and plant that witch into the ground, do I make myself clear?”

“Ahem, William. If I may?” Aunt Morwena materialized beside me and shot her brother a look of death for speaking to me in such a manner.

“What is it, Mori? I don’t have time for lengthy speeches. My helicopter is waiting.”

“I hardly think you can afford to leave in such a foul mood considering your remaining child will be facing an uncertain battle in the next few days. I’m sure you’d feel just awful were something horrible to happen to her. You’d think a man who’d lost the love of his life and a beloved daughter would remember to take every opportunity to show his family how much he loves them instead of barking orders and causing stress,” she chided, giving William a pointed look.

Dad just blinked like a deer in the headlights for the count of ten, then his face transformed into someone who was duly chastised, and he came over to give me a huge embrace and kissed my temple. “Sometimes I forget you are this big, bad, monster-hunter, fully capable of kicking butt and bringing the baddies to justice. Other times I look at you and see the introverted bookworm who complained to me every time your sister disturbed your peace and quiet. Take care of yourself, honey, and I will see you when I return.
